Title IGF::OT::IGF OTHER FUNCTIONS - INTEGRATED MULTI-LAYER INSULATION (IMLI), A NEXT GENERATION MLI TECHNOLOGY, IS BEING DEVELOPED BY QUEST PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CORP (QUEST) AND BALL AEROSPACE. IMLI USES PROPRIETARY DISCRETE SPACER TECHNOLOGY WITH LOW THERMAL CONDUCTANCE MICROMOLDED POLYMER SPACERS (SHOWN IN FIGURES 1 AND 2) TO REDUCE HEAT LEAK, CONTROL LAYER SPACING AND DENSITY, AND FORM A ROBUST BONDED-UP STRUCTURE. IMLI IS A HIGH PERFORMANCE MLI REPLACEMENT FOR NASA AND OTHER AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS, OFFERING HIGHER PERFORMANCE, FEWER LAYERS, LOWER MASS AND MORE REPEATABLE PERFORMANCE THAN NETTING-BASED MLI. CRYOGENIC PIPING HEAT LEAK IS 50 80% OF CRYOTANK HEAT LEAK, AND 40 50% OF LH2 IS LOST - ABOUT 150,000 GALLONS ($300,000) - DURING TRANSFER, CHILL DOWN&GROUND HOLD DURING EACH STS LAUNCH. CRYOGENIC PROPELLANTS, AND THEIR THERMAL INSULATION, ARE ALSO AN IMPORTANT PART OF NASA'S NEXT GENERATION VEHICLES. ORBITAL FUEL DEPOTS MUST PROVIDE ZERO BOILOFF CRYOPROPELLANT LOSS AND MAINTAIN FLIGHTWORTHINESS OVER EXTENDED MISSIONS IN LEO. IT IS KNOWN THAT MLI INSULATION FOR CRYOGENIC PROPELLANT FEED LINES IS MUCH LESS EFFECTIVE THAN MLI FOR TANK INSULATION. A BALL DEFENSE PROGRAM STUDY INDICATES THE HEAT LEAK THROUGH SPIRAL-WRAPPED MLI INTO LINES IS UP TO 10 TIMES WORSE PER AREA THAN TANK MLI. BETTER INSULATION FOR CRYO-FEED LINES IS AN IMPORTANT ENABLING TECHNOLOGY FOR NASA EXPLORATION VEHICLES. IN THIS PHASE I PROJECT WE WOULD MODEL, CONDUCT A TRADE STUDY ON THERMAL REQUIREMENTS FOR NASA SPACECRAFT CRYOGENIC FEED LINES, DESIGN W-IMLI, FABRICATE A PROTOTYPE AND MEASURE THERMAL PERFORMANCE.

AN ULTRA-HIGH PERFORMANCE THERMAL INSULATION, INTEGRATED MLI, IS BEING DEVELOPED FOR NASA AS AN MLI REPLACEMENT, AND OFFERS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED THERMAL PERFORMANCE UNDER SPACE VACUUM CONDITIONS.
